Orange ‘Ōhi‘a Bloom
I took the image for this painting in Kona Hema Preserve on the Big Island of Hawai’i while I was working for The Nature Conservancy. ʻŌhiʻa lehua is a slow-growing native tree that provides habitat for endangered birds and other species. Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death (ROD) caused by a fungus is killing hundreds of thousands of ʻōhiʻa across the islands. Research has found that non-native animals like pigs, sheep and goats spread the disease by rubbing and stripping the trees’ bark and spreading the fungal spores. Fenced areas that keep out these hooved animals have lower occurence of this disease. I printed the image on black-and-white paper and hand-colored it first with oil paints, then added fine details with colored pencils.
