I took the picture for this painting on Maui about a year after one of my best friends from college moved there. I always wonder what he is thinking—or rather feeling—at this moment in time as he gazes out across the seascape. I imagine it is pure joy and nourishment at being in a place where he can connect so powerfully to nature. That is what I feel and am trying to convey with the transcendent colors I used to paint this picture. This image was printed on black-and-white photo paper and hand-colored with oils, pastels and pencils.
