This portrait was inspired by a French bulldog I spotted in a storefront window in Montparnasse, a neighborhood in the south of Paris, just a few blocks from Atelier Gustave — a quaint art gallery tucked away on a lush, tranquil side street. Even though he wasn’t actually at the gallery, he reminds me of that place and the wonderful time I had there.
The name “Gustave” felt like the perfect tribute — a nod to the gallery’s creative spirit and the serendipity of stumbling upon a face that begged to be painted, full of that unmistakable Frenchie charm. For this piece, I wanted to break from my usual realistic coloring and give this guy a burst of outlandish color, in keeping with the vibrance of art and culture found in Montparnasse.
